Responsibility

Skanssi is constantly doing long-term work in taking the environment into account. With our daily choices, we reduce our carbon footprint, stepping towards an even cleaner and more energy-efficient tomorrow.

Ecological actions

  • Carbon footprint

The carbon footprint has decreased by 90% (2011–2021).

  • Green electricity

Skanssi uses 100% certified, green electricity.

  • Geoenergy

With the introduction of geoenergy, annual carbon dioxide emissions are 90% lower.

  • Water and wastewater consumption

Water and wastewater consumption has decreased and we have saved approx. 1.5 liters per customer visit (2010-2020).

  • Self-sufficient

Since 2019, Skanssi has been almost self-sufficient in energy.

  • Solar Panels

Skanssi has 600 square meters of solar panels, which cover the annual energy needs of Skanssi's advertising lights.

  • Bees

Bees are a vital part of a functioning ecosystem. Skanssi has its own bee colony, from which we also get Skanssi honey.

  • Utilization rate

The utilization rate of waste is 100%.

  • Energy consumption

Energy consumption has decreased by 34% since 2010, which corresponds to the annual energy consumption of approx. 260 detached houses.

The beehives on Skanssi's roof produce honey

The apiary is part of Skanssi's ecological activities. The importance of bees to the world's food production is so significant that it is important to bring this story to light.

There are three bee colonies on the roof of the shopping center, which take care of pollinating the plants in the surrounding area. Beekeeper Panu Kuusikko takes care of the bees. The honey harvest is always collected in August and canned. Skanssi honey is not sold, but you can get it from e.g. Skanssi's various competitions.

The beautiful appearance of the beehives has been made in cooperation with Virtanen Paint Factory and Turku Sunnuntaimalari. The nests are located near the entrance to the fourth floor of the eastern parking garage.

BREEAM In Use – environmental certificate

Skanssi has received the internationally significant BREEAM In-Use environmental certificate with the best possible classification Outstanding, first class. Obtaining the certificate with the highest possible grade requires an extremely strong commitment to continuous sustainable development in the maintenance and development of the property.

In the certification process, two entities were evaluated separately from the perspective of responsibility: the property itself (Asset Performance) and its maintenance, as well as related practices (Management Performance). Kauppakeskus Skanssi achieved a rating of first-class (Outstanding) in the real estate sections and very good (Excellent) in the maintenance sections. Skanssi is the first Finnish shopping center that has achieved the BREEAM In-Use Outstanding level.

Skanssi's environmental actions also support Turku's city strategy, which has defined the achievement of carbon neutrality by 2029.

Continuous work to consider the environment

  1. Consumers choose a place of purchase more and more often based on responsibility. Skanssi's several certificates prove the shopping center's commitment to sustainable development.

Skanssi is the first shopping center in Finland to receive the internationally significant BREEAM In-Use environmental certificate with the best outstanding rating in 2022. Getting the best possible rating requires an extremely strong commitment to continuous sustainable development in the maintenance and development of the property. In order to obtain the BREEAM In-Use certificate, the company is committed to developing its energy efficiency, constantly monitoring energy use and reacting immediately to problems.

Skanssi is the only shopping center in Europe with three LEED environmental classifications. Only two shopping centers have platinum-level certificates in Europe. Skanssi is the first shopping center in Europe that has not only platinum but also LEED certification during construction.

    • 2022 Skanssi received BREEAM In-Use environmental certificate with the best outstanding rating

    • 2017 Skanssi received platinum level LEED classification during operation

    • 2012 Skanssi received gold level LEED classification during operation

    • 2010 Skanssi received LEED classification during construction

  2. Skanssi has Europe's largest geoenergy solution for a shopping center. The transition to geoenergy is part of shopping center Skanssi's long-term responsibility work. Geoenergy replaces the energy produced by district heating and district cooling used by the shopping center. In the geoenergy solution, the shopping center's cooling and heating is taken from the shopping center property's own bedrock with the help of 112 geowells. Energy production is currently almost completely carbon neutral. The reduction in emissions brought about by the solution corresponds to the annual carbon dioxide emissions caused by approximately 450 passenger cars. About 230 hectares of forest would be needed to bind the equivalent amount of emissions.

Skanssi was the first shopping center in Finland to use solar energy. The solar panels installed on the roof of the shopping center already cover 600 square meters of roof area and produce approximately 60 MWh of electricity per year. The energy produced by the panels covers the annual energy needs of Skanssi's advertising lights. Since 2019, Skanssi has been almost self-sufficient in energy.

  3. Everyone is welcome to Skanssi. We are open to everyone - including pets.
